Grissom has a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of California in Los Angeles,* but one would assume he has a Ph.D. in entomology as well. He's one of 15 forensic entomologists in the country. He attends various forensic lectures and teaches them as well. He's in charge of the night shift at the Las Vegas Criminalist's Bureau. He was promoted to Supervisor after the disastrous Holly Gribbs incident in which Brass was sent back to Homicide. Catherine Willows is his second-in-command, while Nick, Warrick and Sara report directly to him. He's slowly getting the hang of handling the paperwork involved in his job as Supervisor (such as evaluations). Grissom loves his job -- it's basically his life. It's the scientific puzzle-solving aspect he enjoys, but he detests the politics and paperwork involved as he'd much rather pursue the truth than politics. Catherine called him "politically tone-deaf," which is a good description as he refused to play politics and told the press that he felt the FBI had not caught the Strip Strangler. This did not sit well with the Sheriff, who then put Grissom on an enforced two-week vacation. Grissom once said he curses more in his job now that he does paperwork. He doesn't worry about comitting 'professional suicide,' "at least not while I'm doing it." While he utilizes the most up-to-date scientific methods to find the evidence that will help solve cases, he does like to physically see the results of tests. Instead of using a computer simulation, much to the delight of tourists, he has dummies tossed off a high-rise in order to study if a man fell, jumped, or was pushed to his death. Or blowing up bombs to check out fragment patterns. And he didn't consider it unethical to get a blood sample ("it's customary for all new hires") from Holly Gribbs because he needed some blood to recreate a crime scene (so he filled a fake head with blood and then pulverized it with a golf club). Or breaking mustard jars in supermarket aisles to determine splatter patterns. He will also admit when he's wrong, which seemed to surprise Nick and Warrick. Although he excels at science (he considers himself a "science geek") he is not as good with live people, such as when he let the Marlowes see their long-lost daughter, or when he went to talk to serial killer Syd Goggle without any backup. This is probably because he likes to study people, but doesn't anticipate the long-reaching consequences of his actions. Instead of just supervising his subordinates, he actually teaches them by letting them experiment in order to solve the case. In fact, Sara was a former student of his, and after Holly Gribbs' unfortunate demise, he brought her in to help solve the case and she joined the team permanently. He's protective of his team, and supports them when they get into trouble (such as Warrick with his gambling problem, or Nick when his girlfriend (the prostitute) was murdered). Grissom's office is full of ... stuff. He's got an embalmed piglet ("Miss Piggy," as Warrick called it) in a jar, and somewhere else is a two-headed scorpion. The office is dimly lit, and the walls are covered with sample bags of who knows what, while the shelves are stacked with jars of embalmed organs and creatures. He has an annoying Big Mouth Billy Bass above his office door, which sings when the door is opened. As we've only heard once, we can only hope the batteries died. He's said he has problems with only three things: guys who hit on their wives, sexual assault on children, and the 'scum that deal death (drugs) to kids.' And he encountered all three during the first season, but didn't let it color the way he handled the cases. One case where he got upset was the death of a kidnapped baby, and he actually forced Greg to push aside important lab work to handle that case. The other case was Paul Millander, a serial killer who outsmarted Grissom and is still at large. No doubt Millander is stuck on the 'fish board' (a cork message board shaped like a fish) where Grissom puts unsolved cases ("the ones that got away"). Other times he was upset were when Nick interrupted an interrogation, and when Ecklie cleaned up a crime scene Grissom's team was working on. Grissom was so mad he went to see Ecklie and knocked a coffee pot out of his hand -- which gave him a clue to what had occurred at the crime scene. Like the other CSIs, he does carry a gun, and has pulled twice while on the job: 1) when Amy pulled a gun on Nick in "Who Are You?" and when going to Sara's 'rescue' in "Strip Strangler." He's never fired the weapon. Layout By: carriep63 Graphics Manipulated By: Jen Bug Photo By: Milo Miles Info Table By: lastunknowns |
